Lady Chap, Chap Basketball Takes WJCAC Openers in Big Spring

The Midland College Lady Chap conference opener at Howard College was the a tale of two halves. In the first half MC seemed to struggle finding their continuity and rhythm going into the intermission with a ten point deficit (36-26). However in the second half, Midland College, 13-4 overall and 1-0 in the WJCAC, stepped up defensively to outscore the Lady Hawks 30-18 securing the 56-54 road victory.

With the game tied at 54 apiece Lady Chap post Catherine Kruschke banked in a short layup with a half second left to provide the final margin of victory for Midland College.

Midland College's Meghan Braeuer led the Lady Chaps with 12 points and Femke Vaandrager chipped in with nine points. Achiri Ade and Kruschke pulled down 13 and 11 rebounds respectively. The win was also the Lady Chaps tenth win in their last eleven contests. Midland dominated on the boards recording 44 to Howard's 27.

The men's contest mirrored the women's in some respects with the Chaps falling behind by 15 points in the first half. However unlike the women's game, the Chaps made their move to get back into the contest with five minutes left in the first half. With Howard College leading 30-15 with 5:11 remaining before halftime, MC went on an impressive 20-4 run to go into the break with a 35-34 lead.

The game had a total of eleven lead changes and six ties. In the second half Midland College was in control early, however the Hawks surged to tie the game at 56-56. Midland College continued their offensive pressure to salt away the win by a score of 81-69. The Chaps improved to 10-2 and 1-0 in conference play.

The Chaps were led Justin Coleman's 24 points and four rebounds, followed by Kiwi Gardner's 14 points. Also scoring in double digits were Aly Ahmed and Tiegbe Bamba with 12 and 11 points. Bamba led all players with eleven rebounds followed by Ahmed's eight boards.

NEXT: Both Midland College teams will travel to Levelland, TX for games versus the South Plains Lady Texans and Texans. Those games are scheduled for Thursday, January 10th @ 5:45 and 7:45 p.m. respectively.
