John W. Foster, Sr., M.D., attended to the health of children for 47 years. Shortly after establishing his practice in Midland, he was recruited as the “school district physician,” a position he held until 2000. Dr. Foster passed away on October 19, 2012, at the age of 84.

Because of Dr. Foster’s tireless commitment to children, Midland Pediatric Associates has established a scholarship — the John W. Foster, Sr., M. D. Memorial Endowed Scholarship — in his memory. The scholarship provides assistance to full-time students enrolled in one of MC’s various health sciences programs.

Dr. Foster was not only one of Midland’s most treasured pediatricians and respected physicians, but also was active in civic, nonprofit, medical and educational organizations. He served on the board of Centers for Children and Families’ predecessor, the Family Counseling Service. He also belonged to the Kiwanis Club; served as Chairman of the Administrative Board at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church; was on the board of his alma mater, Southwestern University; and served as Chief of Staff at Midland Memorial Hospital. For years, he was active in the Texas Pediatric Society, where he served as treasurer.

John’s wife Joann, who currently resides at The Village at Manor Park in Midland, is a former member of the Midland College Board of Trustees and the Midland College Foundation Board of Directors.

MC Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Bob Dent said, “We are so appreciative of this scholarship established in memory of Dr. Foster. His love and caring for children and his contributions to Midland’s medical society will not soon be forgotten. Thank you, Midland Pediatric Associates, for honoring one of Midland’s heroes who touched the lives of so many.”
