XTO Energy/ExxonMobil donate $22,000 to MC Math/Science

On May 16, ExxonMobil Foundation donated $22,000 to the Midland College Foundation for the purpose of enhancing math and science initiatives. The grant represents a 3 to 1 match of donations made to Midland College by XTO Energy and ExxonMobil employees, retirees and surviving spouses in 2012.

In the letter which accompanied the donation, Suzanne McCarron, president of ExxonMobil Foundation, wrote, “ExxonMobil Foundation is working to improve U. S. math and science education by supporting programs that benefit both students and teachers. We hope that you will join our efforts by directing a portion of our matching funds to programs at your institution that provide math and science teachers with professional development, attract more young people to teach math and science, and support programs that encourage women and minorities to become scientists and engineers.”

Dr. Margaret Wade, dean of the MC Math & Science Division said, “It is an honor to be able to use these funds to support Midland College’s research endeavors. Our faculty work hard to mentor students in various projects throughout the year. Many of these have an impact on the Midland community, such as our chemistry department’s analysis of Midland drinking water and our biology department’s work to identify microbes capable of degrading hydrocarbons in West Texas soil samples. Through these activities and others, MC students are able to truly understand the importance that science plays in our society.”
