Despite a recent player defection, injuries, illness and a small number of available players, the Midland College Lady Chaparral volleyball team appeared to be playing well of late, winning four of their last five matches including a three set sweep in their WJCAC opener versus Frank Phillips College. However the Ladies appeared a bit sluggish in last night's four set loss to Odessa College at the Odessa College Sports Center.

versus the Wranglers
MC, 7-8 overall and 1-1 in conference, lost by scores of 23-25, 25-19, 14-25, 16-25. Perhaps the sluggish nature of the team's performance is a result of a few players needing to play virtually every minute of every match during the season, thus far, a result of the challenges mentioned above. Two of the formerly injured (freshmen Shalie Case and Nuvia Hawthorne), returned to the line up but saw limited action last night.

Samantha Orta sets
Midland College was led by Larissa Gomes and Gaby Nieto with 12 and nine kills respectively. Naomi Posada also recorded eight kills in the contest. MC's dual setters Kristina Gafford and Samantha Orta had 18 and 16 assists to lead the Lady Chaps. Defensively Marina Salazar led MC with 25 digs followed by Gomes, Gafford and Orta with 12, 11 and 10 digs. Sophomore Megan Sanchez paced MC with three blocks, while Posada and Nieto each recorded 2 blocks in the contest.

NEXT MATCH: Midland College returns to action on Saturday, September 21st in a Tri-Match with Brookhaven College (NJCAA III) and Western Texas College. The action begins at 12:00 p.m. with Brookhaven vs. Western Texas College followed by a 2:00 p.m. match between Brookhaven and the Lady Chaparrals.

Also on Saturday, Midland College will host their annual Lady Chap Volleyball Alumnae Match at 6:00 p.m. 18 former members of the Lady Chap volleyball team are scheduled to participate in the match.
