To paraphrase an old sports adage, "Baseball is a lucky sport. The harder I work at it, the luckier I get." For two current members of the Midland College baseball team, their hard work has led them to a opportunity to play for the University of Oklahoma Sooners (NCAA Division I / Big 12), beginning in the 2014-15 school year.
Chap pitcher Thomas McIlraith and catcher/infielder, Chris Shaw inked with the Sooners this afternoon in the Midland College Physical Education Building. The two players were joined by their MC teammates and coaches, as well as the parents and sister of McIlraith.
McIlraith, a 6'2" right-handed pitcher from Amarillo, TX (Tascosa), went 8-4 (12 starts) in 2013 with an ERA of 4.06 (77.2 IP) in his freshman season with the Chaparrals. Shaw, a multi-position player from Winnipeg, Manitoba, batted .380 with 68 hits, 22 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs, including 64 RBI for the 48-15 Chaparrals.
Both players are expected to lead a talented and athletic ball club in pursuit of back-to-back WJCAC and NJCAA Region V titles, and perhaps a return trip to the NJCAA Baseball JUCO World Series in 2014.
McIlraith and Shaw are the 10th and 11th members of the 2013 Midland College team to sign with an NCAA Division I university.
