Here to help, this summer at Your College

At Midland College, we offer our students a friendly atmosphere - one in which our diverse student population has the opportunity to know faculty, staff and classmates. Many students enroll immediately following high school, while others return to college after working, parenting, or managing other adult responsibilities. Some come to gain skills to enhance previous degrees or to receive new training for a changing job market.

The mission of the Student Services is to help students develop their potential. This is accomplished by providing information, counseling, and referral; student development, co-curricular, and academic support activities; and admission, assessment, and job placement services.

That includes tutoring ...the schedule of free tutoring services for the 2013 Summer Semester is now available online, in a downloadable/printable Adobe .pdf file.

Our 3rd annual "Technical Shoot-Out" Golf Scramble will be June 7, 2013, 8:30 a.m. at Hogan Park. [Below] are the forms for the event.

Proceeds from the event are used to support our high school dual enrollment students with scholarship money to help them transition to college and stay in school. So far, we have helped over 20 students stay in college.

Please help us by entering a team or sponsoring a hole. We have several options for you to help support the event. If you have a team or a single looking for a team, sign up, come out, and play.

Midland College BEDC to host Homeownership Fair June 15

The Midland College Business & Economic Development Center (BEDC) will celebrate Homeownership Month in June by hosting a Homeownership Fair on Saturday, June 15 at Midland College Cogdell Learning Center.


We will provide free booths to non-profits and charge $25 to for-profits to cover the cost of the food. We are targeting people preparing for homeownership and including a celebration of those who have achieved their goal of homeownership. We plan to have representatives from housing providers, lenders, Realtors, insurance agencies, title companies, and homeowner services.

Please mark your calendar and let me know if you would like to reserve a booth. We reserve the right to limit the number of displays from each industry in order to have a diverse group. The event flyer is below.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Wendy Wood-Collins back to our Midland College family. Wendy begins her employment today as Director of Health Sciences Continuing Education.

Wendy comes to us from Medical Center Hospital with a wealth of experience and expertise. She earned her LVN and ADN from Odessa College, BSN from University of Texas at Arlington and is currently pursuing a MBA/MSN at Grand Canyon University. From 2002-2006, Wendy worked as an instructor in HSCE teaching CNA and Introduction to Health Profession classes.

Wendy will office at the ATC in Room 138A and her direct number is 432-681-6303. If you are over at the ATC, please stop in and introduce yourself. If you are entrenched on the main-campus, give her a call and let her know you are glad she found her way back to Midland College.

GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO - Nobody at Suplizio Field seemed to be shocked when the Midland College baseball team rallied back on Tuesday afternoon against Palm Beach State (Fla.) in an elimination game of the JUCO World Series.

The Chaparrals rallied from a five-run deficit in the sixth inning to tie the game in the ninth, before losing the game 7-6 in 10 innings in a loser's bracket gam.

GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO - The No. 5-ranked Midland College baseball team went from feeling confident to survivalist mode after Monday night at the JUCO World Series. No. 8 Central Alabama pounded out 13 hits, Trojan starter Paul Young pitched a complete game and the Chaparrals didn’t have an answer in an 11-4 loss to the Trojans in front of 11,997 fans celebrating Memorial Day at Suplizio Field ...

... Midland College (48-14), which saw a 15-game winning streak snapped, falls into the loser’s bracket and now must prevent elimination when they play Palm Beach State (Florida) at 4 p.m. (CDT).

Monday, May 27th, 2013 (TODAY) kicks-off the second week of the Midland College Police Department's participation in the nationwide "Click It ot Ticket" Initiative, going on now through June 2nd. MC Police will be out enforcing seat belt violations as well as all traffic laws on and around Midland College campuses.

You can help protect your friends and family when you lead by example and remind others to buckle up. It turns out 9 out of 10 people fasten their seat belt when asked to do so. So speak up and buckle up, every time on every trip.

The Midland College baseball team begins JUCO World Series play on Saturday, May 25th (TODAY) @ 12:00 p.m. against Kaskaskia College, IL. Kaskaskia advanced to the national tournament by winning the Northern District title on Saturday versus Wabash Valley College, IL by a score of 17-7. Kaskaskia's season record stands at 39-10. Midland College, 47-13 this season, is the Southwestern District representative.

MC Chaps Win Region V Title, Headed to JUCO World Series

The Midland College baseball team went 4-0 in the 2013 NJCAA Region V Baseball Championship Tournament, winning games on four consecutive days and against teams with strong traditions of excellence on the diamond. The Chaps defeated Weatherford College, Temple College, WJCAC stalwart Howard College and national-power Grayson County Community College to secure the Region V title. It was the first-ever Region V Baseball title in the school's history and advanced the Chaparrals to the 2013 Alpine Bank JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO (May 31-June 1).

In an unusual bit of baseball efficiency, Midland College head coach David Coleman only used a total of five pitchers in four games. In Midland's opening game win over Weatherford College (2-1), starting pitcher Thomas McIlraith went 6 2/3 innings before handing the ball to closer Jared Robinson. Robinson, a University of Houston signee, closed the door on the Coyotes giving Midland a narrow one-run victory. Offensively only Ethan Kohnle and Blair Beck could muster a hit each for the Chaparrals. Matt Reyes and Jay Gonzalez each recorded RBIs for Midland College.

In the Chaps second game, sophomore starter Jason Zgardowski (an Angelo State University signee) threw a two-hit, shutout versus Temple College for MC's second win in the tournament (7-0). The MC bats came alive, with Jeremie Fagnan, Chris Shaw, Hunter Redman and Gonzalez each recording two hits in the contest. MC's Daniel Vargas chipped in with two RBIs.

Game three saw Cody Brown take the hill versus a very familiar Howard College Hawks team. The two teams, both from the Western Conference, played five games against each other this season with the Chaps winning three games. Brown went 5.0 innings before being relieved by Robinson who gave up only four hits in his four full innings of duty in the Chaps' razor-thin victory over the Hawks (7-6) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Chaparral batters Kohnle and Redman had two hits apiece with Redman driving in three runs in the game.

The win over HC moved the Chaps into the championship game versus Grayson County CC. The Vikings entered the tournament ranked 10th nationally. Midland's Jeremy Filipek (a UTSA signee), was in control from the outset, spreading out eight GCCC hits over 9.0 innings. The Midland College 'hit parade' was led by Vargas, Shaw and Redman with two hits each, including Shaw's grandslam homerun (four RBIs).

The Region V Tournament championship advances Midland College into the JUCO World Series where they will open play on Saturday, May 25th @ 12:00 p.m. against Kaskaskia College, IL. Kaskaskia advanced to the national tournament by winning the Northern District title on Saturday versus Wabash Valley College, IL by a score of 17-7. Kaskaskia's season record stands at 39-10. Midland College, 47-13 this season, is the Southwestern District representative.

Tickets for the Midland College Auto/Diesel Technology Cookout are $12 and they are available in the Technology Center, Room 143.

We also have the raffle tickets which are $2 each. Some of the raffle items are $25 gift cards from: McCalister's, Starbucks, Rosa's, Dickey's BBQ, Jason's Deli, and Burgers, Fries, and Cherry Pies. And  we have added gift cards from: TMP Trailers-$100, Academy-$50, Lowe's-$50, Michael's-$25.

Midland College's Fagnan Named WJCAC MVP, Coleman Selected as Coach of the Year

Members of the Midland College Chaparral baseball team have earned individual honors in the course of the team's 2013 season ... a season that will continue nwext week in Grand Junction, Colorado, when the Chaparrals make their very first appearance in the NJCAA World Series national championship tournament.

Midland College sophomore Jeremie Fagnan (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) was recently selected as the 2013 Player of the Year for the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Fagnan who played firstbase and outfield for the Chaps, led the WJCAC in steals (32) and RBI (71) this season. He is currently 28th in the NJCAA in batting average (.414), tied for 1st with 71 RBI and is 15th in steals (32). Fagnan has appeared in each of the Chaparral's 60 games this season, leading the team in batting average, RBI, SB and is second in OB% (.484) and second in HRs.

Joining Fagnan on the All-WJCAC first team are sophomores Blair Beck (Midland, TX), Matt Reyes (Midland, TX) as well as freshman Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, Alberta, Canada). Beck played outfield while Reyes and Shaw were named for their play in the infield.
MC head coach David Coleman was named as the conference Coach of the Year for 2013. Coleman guided the Chaps to a 47-13 record, including going 28-8 in the WJCAC. Midland College won the 2013 WJCAC title, the second in team history (2002), and recently won the 2013 NJCAA Region V Baseball Tournament. Coleman has led the Chaparrals to their first-ever appearance in the Alpine Bank JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO (May 31-June 1).

Additionally, four Midland College baseball team members were chosen as members of the Honorable Mention All-WJCAC team. Honorable Mention selections include sophomore catcher Hunter Redman, sophomore middle infielder Joel Atkinson and sophomore pitchers Jason Zgardowski and Jared Robinson.

MC Veterans Affairs spreading the word on Hazlewood

The MC Veterans Affairs Office is here to assist students seeking VA education benefits. We strive to ensure that each student fulfills his/her responsibilities under the VA program. And that includes spreading the word about the ...

Hazlewood Exemption

The purpose of the Hazlewood Exemption (Hazlewood Act, Section 54.203, Texas Education Code) is to provide an education benefit to honorably discharged or separated Texas veterans and to eligible dependent children and spouses of Texas veterans.

SB 639 (82nd Texas Legislative, Regular) authorized new provisions which are effective with tuition and fee charges for Fall, 2011.

How to Apply: Veteran must complete HE-V form, dependent/spouse would complete both the HE-V and HE-D.

Veterans must: Provide proof (DD214) from the Department of Defense regarding their military service and nature of discharge.

Children: Copy of birth certificate or tax return indicating dependency on or after the time the parent died or became disable. (Effective Fall 2011, all children applying for the exception must be 25 or younger)

Spouse: Copy of the legal marriage certificate or tax return indicating the marriage status with the veteran

When applying you must also send a copy showing previous hours used, even if its "0"

Renewal: Each qualified veteran, child or spouse wishing to receive an exemption through the Hazlewood Act (Texas Education Code 54.203) must complete and sign the following renewal application, once they have met all the requirements to qualify for benefits, and provide it to the institution. Lady Chap Softball Earns All WJCAC, All NJCAA Region V West Honors

Several members of the Midland College Lady Chaparral softball team earned All-WJCAC and Region V West honors for 2013. MC's Holly Herrington (Odessa, TX), Naomi Posada (Midland, TX) and Marlene Fields (Stockton, CA) were each named to the All-WJCAC First Team this season. Herrington is a sophomore pitcher, Posada is a freshman infielder while Fields is a sophomore outfielder.

Joining the All-WJCAC team as Honorable Mention selections are infielders Leanna Meyer (Oahua, HI), Pililani Smith-Keopuhiwa (Oahua, HI) and Taylor Daniels (Norco, CA). Also making the Honorable Mention team was outfielder Gaby Muniz (Midland, TX).

Herrington, Smith-Keopuhiwa, and Fields were each selected to the All-NJCAA Region V West team this season.

Midland College to honor GED graduates

Over 200 students who have participated in MC's Adult Basic Education program have obtained their GED! The GED graduation ceremony will be held at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center. Eight of these graduates have qualified for the National Adult Education Honor Society (NAEHS) and will be honored for their outstanding academic achievements through their Adult Basic Education curriculum.

In addition, 16 students, who recently took their eight-week citizenship class and passed their oral and written citizenship examinations, will be recognized as U.S. citizens.

Regional Champs' Homecoming

Regional title in hand, the Midland College Chaparral baseball team headed home to Midland ... at least for a little while ...

The Chaps had just won their very first NJCAA Region V Championship, and were greeted upon their return to the campus by family, friends and the media.

But, the Chaps will only be home for a little while ... they will be among the teams taking the field for the 2013 NJCAA World Series, the national championship tournament, May 25 - June 1 in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Jordan Dreiling was introduced as the new head coach of the Midland College Chaparral men’s basketball program today, during a press conference in the Gibson Board Room located in the Pevehouse Administration Building.

Coach Dreiling is a native of Kansas City, KS and played college basketball at Highland Community College (KS) for two seasons. Following his time at HCC, he transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant (NCAA II) where he also played for two seasons.

At SEOSU, Dreiling was named to the Lone Star Conference first team all-academic team and was the SEOSU Male Academic Athlete of the Year in 2005. Dreiling received a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education in 2005 and a Masters in Secondary Education in 2008, both from Southeast Oklahoma State University.

Jordan joined the coaching staff at SEOSU where he served as an assistant coach for five seasons. He helped guide the Savage Storm to a #4 national ranking, a 27-5 overall record and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Coach Dreiling left SEOSU in 2010 to become an assistant coach at Central Arizona College. He became the head coach at CAC in 2011 and guided the Vaqueros to their best-ever record in 2013, finishing the season with a 30-5 overall record, including a 20-2 conference record. Coach Dreiling and the Vaqueros advanced to the Elite Eight at the 2013 NJCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships.

His current collegiate coaching record is 50-15 (.769). Dreiling was named ACCAC Coach of the Year, District 1 in 2012-13, after leading CAC to their first-ever conference and district championships.
