Midland College Athletic Director
The Midland College Chaparral Baseball team has two goals as they advance to this weekend's Region V Baseball Championships. The first is to continue playing at the level that has seen the team win 21 of their last 25 games, improving their record to 34-22 overall this season. The second, of course, is to defend their 2013 Region V championship title and a return trip to Grand Junction, CO and the NJCAA JUCO Division I National Baseball Tournament.
Midland College coach David Coleman, along with assistant coaches Hector Rodriguez and Chris Rowland, guided the Chaps into the Region V Championships after seeing the team begin 0-10 in the WJCAC, only to have the finish conference play at 19-17, good for the #4 seed from the Western Conference. Midland College is joined by WJCAC champions, New Mexico Junior College, Frank Phillips College and Howard College as well as Grayson County CC, North Central Texas College, Temple College and McLennan CC each from the NTJCAC.
The eight team field, brings together some of the best two-year college talent in the nation for four days of outstanding baseball action. Tournament play begins on Friday, May 9th @ 10:00 a.m. with McLennan vs. Frank Phillips. The Chaparrals will play in the 1:00 p.m. contest versus Grayson CC (Northern Champion) in a match-up between the regional finalists from 2013. The remaining first round games will see Howard vs. NCTC at 5:00 p.m. and NMJC vs. McLennan in an 8:00 p.m. contest.
