The Federal TRIO Programs were signed into legislation on August 20, 1964 under the War on Poverty initiatives. Since the inception of the Federal TRIO Programs, with Upward Bound being the first, countless lives have been changed through the expansion of educational access and opportunity. Midland College has served as a host institution of TRIO Upward Bound, consecutively, since 1999

Thank you,

What is Upward Bound?

The summer program participants consist of local 10th-12th grade Upward Bound students and recent high school graduates. These students have spent the last several weeks living in the MC residence halls and taking classes to better prepare them for college. High school participants take non-credit, college preparatory courses in various subject areas and recent graduates or “Bridge” students are enrolled in transferable college credit courses. In addition to classroom learning, Upward Bound students have been exposed to hands-on community service projects and leadership development opportunities with the Young Professionals of Midland, the Buffalo Trail Council - Boy Scouts of America and other community organizations. The students have also experienced various cultural activities.

Thursday’s event will highlight the summer achievements of participants who have successfully completed the five-week Summer Academy. In addition, new Upward Bound students will be officially pinned and inducted into the program, and recent graduates will be honored as they pursue their college and career endeavors and “pass the torch” to their younger peers. Former Upward Bound students have also been invited to join the festivities which will celebrate 50 years of Upward Bound. The keynote address will be given by Monica Lujan, a former MC Upward Bound student and first-generation-to-college graduate from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

This year’s Upward Bound Summer Program will conclude with a five-day trip to Oklahoma scheduled for July 14-18. The itinerary will include college campus visits to the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, team-building challenge courses and visits to historical and cultural museums and exhibits.
