Chap golf takes top team, individual honors at tournament

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Through the first five holes at Green Tree Country Club on Tuesday, Lucas McCubbin wasn’t feeling very good about his golf game. He was 3-over par at the time.

But then the Midland College freshman and Midland High grad starting hitting the ball better and then shot a 32 on the back nine for an impressive final round score of 2-under par 69 under wet, cool conditions during the final round of the Omega Treating Chemicals Invitational.

“I had to get something turned around,” McCubbin said. “I started hitting the ball so much better and I started hitting them closer so I can give myself more opportunities to make putts.”

Thanks to that final round, McCubbin beat out sophomore teammate David Wicks for the medalist title by five strokes with a three-round 208 total. McCubbin and Wicks also led the Chaparrals to an impressive 34-stroke team victory with 273-278-283--834 total ...

The Chaps are on the road for their next match, the Western Junior College Athletic Conference Tournament at Gaines County Golf Course in Seminole, Texas on March 26.
