Parking/traffic advisory for tomorrow (Thursday) at Midland College

Even with regular, day-to-day activities, the roads and parking lots around the Midland College campus will be busy ... with classes, visits by university rep's for transfer Q&A, Early College High School and more. Add a couple of special events such as the Midland ISD College Forum and the free "Jazz Under the Stars Concert", and things will be especially busy.

"Thursday at 1:00 p.m. the visitor and employee parking lot by the Scharbauer Student Center will become exit-only," Lt. Steven Bracken of the Midland College Police Department reports. "If you are already parked there, you DO NOT need to move your vehicle; however, no one will be allowed to pull back in. This is in preparation for the concert tomorrow. Thank you for your understanding."

The MC Police Department also advises, "due to parking concerns for the events on Thursday, the parking lot between Welding (the Technical Center) and the Helen L. Greathouse Childcare Center will be closed all day Thursday. It will be closed beginning Wednesday afternoon." They are referring to the small lot behind the HLGCC. The main parking lot in front of the center will still be open.

Visitors to the MC campus tomorrow/Thursday might give themselves a little extra time, just in case traffic/parking takes a little longer that usual. Also, there will be signs to help visitors find parking for tomorrow's special events.

An accelerated pathway to a medical degree

• Midland College announces innovative partnership with Midland Memorial Hospital and the University of North Texas

On Friday, Midland College (MC), Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) and the University of North Texas (UNT) will officially announce an innovative accelerated education and training partnership entitled Primary Care Pathway that is designed to enable West Texas residents to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree (DO). The basic structure of the program is as follows:

Two years of full-time study at Midland College
One year of full-time study at the University of North Texas in Denton
Four years of study at UNT Health Science Center – Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine

In addition to the academic curriculum, students will complete two summer experiences. The first summer will be a clinically oriented program at Midland Memorial Hospital. The second summer program will be a medical sciences-related program at UNT Health Science Center.

Students who successfully complete the DO degree and become licensed will be eligible for employment at major hospitals, including MMH. As MMH grows with the Midland community, these students will help fulfill a need for licensed medical professionals.

MC President Dr. Steve Thomas said, “This is a ‘win-win’ for everyone, especially for our students, who will accomplish the first two years of their education at Midland College, where the average class size is just 29; therefore, participants will be able to receive lots of personalized attention from accomplished faculty members. Program participants are eligible for various MC scholarships, and those who graduate from a Midland County high school and complete the required volunteer hours may take advantage of the Legacy Scholarship. In addition, throughout the program, participants will have opportunities to interact with faculty, staff and healthcare providers to understand the nature and complexities of modern medicine from both a scientific and patient care perspective.”

The public is invited to the Primary Care Pathway information session to be held on Friday, October 2, at 12:00 noon in the Scharbauer Student Center Carrasco Room on the Midland College campus. Getting ready for Thursday night

Early morning arrivals at Midland College were greeted today with the sight a road crew already hard at work on MC's quadrangle, with stage set-up well underway. That stage will be the setting Thursday night when Midland College "Jazz Under the Stars" presents The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Thursday, October 1, near Hodge Carillon Tower in the center of the MC main campus, 3600 N. Garfield.

The main performance is at 8:00 p.m. with a special opening act performed by Midland College alumni, students and area high school students, “Jazz for the Ages” at 7:00 p.m.

Midland College Students In Philanthropy (SIP) will be selling gourmet popcorn, pickles, soda and water at "Jazz Under the Stars," featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. All proceeds from these concession sales go to the SIP grant-making activities in the spring semester, benefiting local non-profit organizations.

This is a FREE event. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy "Jazz Under the Stars."

The Lady Chaparrals dropped a league home match to Western Texas College a week ago and then lost to San Jacinto (3-0) and Lee College (3-1) over the weekend in Baytown ... MC coach Tammie Jimenez said despite the losses over the weekend, her team played better than it did a week ago. Still, the concern she has is taking that same confidence level her team has with non-conference opponents into WJCAC matches ...

MC to observe National Student Day next Thursday

October 8 is National Student Day, a day for students to give back to the community.

Midland College Student Government has chosen the Lone Star Sanctuary as the organization they would like to help. Between now and Thursday, October 8 they will be collecting blankets, collars, toys and food for dogs and cats. The drop off location is in the Marie Hall Atrium by room 101 – there is a huge poster, you can’t miss it!

On Thursday, Oct. 8 between 9:00-1:00, they will also be collecting cash donations and Lone Star should have some of their furry friends there between 9:00-11:00.

If you are an animal lover, we invite you to help in our collection/fundraising. If you would like to donate before next Thursday, you can drop off your check to Jan Johnston in the Student Center or give it to me here in MHAB #160 and the toys, etc. can be dropped off anytime. Last year we raised over $350, so we would like to break our record!

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to present workshop for area music students

On Thursday, Midland College (MC), will host a special concert featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The special “Jazz Under the Stars” concert will be held outside in the Midland College quadrangle area near the Hodge Carillon Tower. The event is FREE; no tickets are required. As an added treat, the opening act will feature the Midland College Jazz for the Ages band composed of MC students and alumni, as well as area high school music students.

Daniel Israel, manager of programming and touring for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, said, “Education is a major part of our mission. We strive to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz not only through performance, but also through education and advocacy. To that end, we are happy to be able to coordinate a Q&A session and music workshop in conjunction with our October 1 performance in Midland.”

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) has graciously agreed to hold an open sound check at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday followed by a Q&A session led by drummer Ali Jackson. Then, from 5:00-6:00 p.m., JLCO trumpeter Marcus Printup will conduct a workshop in the Allison Fine Arts Building Wagner & Brown Auditorium. Midland College and JLCO invite area music students to both the sound check and the workshop.

Kathy Fletcher, executive director of the MC Foundation, stated, “We are delighted to be able to provide this wonderful opportunity to the Midland community. We hope that people will bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the autumn evening listening to some great jazz music. The JLCO performance begins at 8:00, and we invite you to come early at 7:00 to hear the special MC Jazz for the Ages band.”


Fletcher reminds the public that no alcoholic beverages will be permitted. The MC Students in Philanthropy organization will be selling gourmet popcorn, soft drinks, water and other snacks. Also Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis posters and other memorabilia will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the MC Student Government Association. Texting-while-driving ban comes into effect Thursday

MIDLAND, TEXAS - The start of the fiscal year Thursday also heralds the first day of the city ordinance banning texting while driving. City Council passed the measure Aug. 11 after several public hearings.

A violation would occur when the driver of a vehicle uses “a wireless communication device (mobile phone, tablet, laptop computer, etc.) to view, send or compose an electronic message or using the device to interact with application software, commonly known as ‘apps,’ while operating a motor vehicle on public roadway,” as reported in previous Reporter-Telegram articles.

City Council members said the measure would not stop all cellphone-related accidents but would act as a deterrent to people who do not want to risk a fine ...

Winter Interim a time of opportunity at MC

Don't let the mild temperatures fool you ... preparations for the Winter Interim Semester are well underway here, at Midland College. Interim semesters offer a great opportunity for students to cross one more course off their list ... and we're not just talking about MC students. Students from other schools, including four-year universities, fill part of their winter (and summer) break time with an interim semester class through MC.

Correct commas, proper periods and more ...

National Punctuation Day is a celebration of punctuation that occurs each year on September 24th in the United States of America.Founded by Jeff Rubin in 2004, National Punctuation Day simply promotes the correct usage of punctuation. Rubin encourages appreciators of correct punctuation and spelling to send in pictures of errors spotted in everyday life.

In a webinar earlier today, Jerry Swiatek - Instructional Technology Specialist at Citrus County School Board, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida area - reminded us that good punctuation could make a HUGE difference

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Midland College volleyball coach Tammie Jimenez probably thought she was watching a rerun of last year’s team at Chaparral Center on Wednesday night.

Just like last year, Jimenez said her Lady Chaparrals lacked killer instinct, did not have the excitement and fire needed to play and win a conference match and did not have drive and determination to come back from adversity.

It all amounted to Western Texas College beating MC on its home court 26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22 in an early Western Junior College Athletic Conference match ...

An award-winning author, journalist, and radio and TV personality, Stephen J. Dubner is co-author of the international bestsellers Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, which have sold more than 5 million copies in 35 languages. Their third book, Think Like a Freak, released in May 2014, became an instant New York Times bestseller as well.

Freakonomics, published in April 2005, was an instant international best-seller and cultural phenomenon. It made numerous "books of the year" lists, a few "books of the decade" lists, and won a variety of awards, including the inaugural Quill Award, a BookSense Book of the Year Award, and a Visionary Award from the National Council on Economic Education. For the third year in a row, the MC Chemistry Club has received Honorable Mention by the American Chemical Society for club activities. The annual chapter report was reviewed by three reviewers, and the award was based on the club’s excellent outreach, community activities and student leadership activities. MC Chemistry Club Advisor Dr. Pat Nandakumar reports that the club is planning exciting activities again for the 2015-16 academic year.

Dr. William Feeler, dean of Fine Arts and Communication, will have two poems published in the fall 2015 edition of the poetry journal The Lost Country. Dr. Feeler’s poems are entitled, “On the Black” and “Beyond Baseball.”

MC Government Professor Dr. Terry Gilmour, professor of Government, was elected to the executive council of the Political Science Education Section of the American Political Science Association at its annual meeting earlier this month.

Terry Joliffe, instructor of English, has been appointed to the Arts Council of Midland as a board member.

Karen Pape, assistant professor of English, has been notified that her poem “Grief at Sixty” will be published in the online journal Red River Review in November.

News from Institutional Planning, Effectiveness and Research (IPER) Department

Dr. Karen Waggoner now holds the position of director of Institutional Effectiveness. Her office is AMS 07, and her phone number is 685-5540.
Sarah Hagelstein has joined the department as secretary for Institutional Effectiveness and Research. Sarah will be working with Dr. Waggoner and MC Research Associate Crystal Velasquez. Sarah is also located in AMS 07, and her phone number is 685-5592
The IPER Department has led the development of new institutional goals and objectives and is working with the major areas of the college to develop plans for implementation. Strategic Goals include increasing enrollment; implementing a guided pathways approach; engaging all members of the college community in the mission; and acquiring physical, fiscal, human and technological resources.

IPER Major Fall Activities 

The 2015-16 academic year is the first year of a two-year assessment cycle for educational programs and general education. Faculty will be collecting data and artifacts to provide information on attainment of program level student learning outcomes and general education competencies. This is the first time that assessment of the core curriculum will be included in the process.
MC’s 5th Year Interim Report to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, (SACSCOC) will be due in September 2016. Development of this report has begun and will involve individuals from across the campus.

Pop Up Toasters, Toastmasters

The Pop Up Toasters TM club meets each Tuesday from 6:30 until 7:30 AM on the second floor overlook the gym of First Presbyterian Church, corner of Illinois/Texas and “A” Street. This might be a better time for some students, especially those working full or part-time and with families.

I speak from experience that this organization can make a difference in a person’s professional career by preparing them for oral technical and written presentations. Visit their website for more information.

We are now accepting applications for Runners and Instructors for the 2016 edition of Kids' College at MC, which will take place in two sessions during the month of June, 2016, on the Midland College campus.

All RUNNERS must be at least 14 years of age by May 15, 2016 (proof of age will be required). You must be able to work both sessions and must be available each day from 12:15 until 5:30 pm. The first day of Kids’ College will require time beginning from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. On occasion, some Runners may be asked to come in earlier or stay later.

A list of duties can include filling water balloons, assisting with the car pool, giving directions and answering questions, assisting teachers in specific classes, preparing refreshments for the snack break, running errands for the teachers and the coordinators, keeping litter picked up and lots more.

Application deadline for RUNNERS is Monday, February 22, 2016.

For INSTRUCTORS, classes are held Monday through Thursday, as the college is closed on Friday in the summer. Classes begin at 12:40 p.m. and end at 5:00 p.m., and the kids have an opportunity to take as many as three classes per day. Each class lasts for one hour and twenty minutes. The age groups are usually divided into two sections, one for 1st-3rd graders and one for 4th-6th graders.

Application deadline for INSTRUCTORS is Monday, January 11, 2016.

Tom Craddick to be honored by MC and the Petroleum Museum

• Opportunities for joint educational ventures

On Wednesday, Midland College (MC) and the Petroleum Museum will host a special reception for invited guests to honor Texas State Representative Tom Craddick. Mr. Craddick was instrumental in overseeing the annual disbursement of over $300,000 in funds to go to MC and be directed to the Petroleum Museum for educational programming.

The special legislative appropriation of $355,325 replaces the line item that had been designated to the American Airpower Heritage Museum. This past February the MC Board of Trustees voted to withhold the funding for the American Airpower Heritage Museum because the Commemorative Air Force had moved its headquarters to south Dallas and took prominent exhibits--including the famed nose art exhibit—with it to the Metroplex. Subsequently, in May, Craddick announced that language had been added to House Bill 2, the supplemental appropriations bill, to include that appropriations now be distributed through Midland College to the Petroleum Museum.

MC President Dr. Steve Thomas said, “The legislative line-item appropriation was originally intended to assist in providing educational value to Midland College’s service area. Thanks to Mr. Craddick’s efforts, the appropriation has been redirected to pass through Midland College toward educational ventures at the Petroleum Museum. These funds will remain in the College’s service area and benefit the Midland community.”

“I am elated that the House supported my efforts to keep this funding in Midland,” Craddick said in a May 2015 press release. “I am confident that the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum will use this money in a responsible and accountable manner that will enhance education efforts in our area.”

Kathy Shannon, executive director of the Petroleum Museum, reported that the funding will enable the museum to enhance science and history education throughout the Permian Basin.

“We look forward to working with Midland College to bring exciting new educational opportunities to our community,” Shannon said.

MC Executive Vice President Dr. Richard Jolly explained that MC instructional leaders and museum staff are planning joint educational ventures, including speakers, special exhibits and other community events.

Get ready NOW for next month's truck driving course at MC

The Midland College Transportation Training Program provides individuals with the proper training in order to obtain a CDL License to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely within the rules and regulations set by the Department of Transportation.

We offer a four-week program that is 160 hours and consists of instruction in the classroom. Training is provided in pre-trip, post-trip,and backing. The last 80 hours involve actual hands-on driving by the student. Upon completion of the class, the student will receive a Class A License with the ability of obtaining endorsements in Hazmat, Doubles and Triples and Tankers.

Midland College's Professional Truck Driving program is an intensive four-week course scheduled from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday. The program is a total of 160 hours and is comprised of the following sections:

  • Control systems
  • Basic control
  • Shifting
  • Backing
  • Turning
  • Coupling and Uncoupling
  • Communications
  • Speed Management
  • Space Management
  • Cargo handling & documentation
  • Environmental issues
