New scholarship application at Midland College

• Streamlined process available for students and donors

From Rebecca Bell
Dean of Community Relations & Special Events

Thanks to the generosity of Midland College (MC) donors, a large number of scholarships are provided to students at Midland College (MC)—more than at most community colleges. These private scholarships are based on various criteria, such as financial need, grade point average, age, military service, gender and degree/area of interest. In order to better serve students and meet scholarship donor intent, MC implemented a new scholarship application, effective April 20, 2016.

Lesley Isaacs, MC Scholarship & Special Projects coordinator, said, “The new scholarship application provides an exciting opportunity for MC to connect with students and donors and streamline the scholarship matching process. With the old scholarship application process, Financial Aid staff were having to manually match students with donor criteria. This process was time consuming and often resulted in students not knowing about scholarship awards until right before the beginning of a semester. Now, the new electronic application system handles the matching of student qualification to donor criteria, and the process is much more efficient. Through the new online system, donors are also able to provide information about themselves, such as a brief bio and reason for establishing the scholarship as well as a picture. This enables the student to get to know the donor better. Students receiving scholarships upload “thank you” letters directly to the system so that the donor can read about the student to whom the scholarship has been awarded.”

The new application is available at www.midland.edu/scholarships . Students applying for scholarships beginning with the Summer II Session at MC should complete the new application. Students interested in scholarships for the Fall 2016 Semester should also go ahead and complete the application.
