New this semester, the Midland College (MC) Workforce Continuing Education department is offering professional development opportunities for painting contractors, floor installers, window installers, renovation contractors and supervisors that meet requirements and certification guidelines of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Texas Department of State Health Services Toxic Substance Control Division and the Environmental Protection Agency.

On Friday, February 24, Lead Paint Initial Certification is scheduled from 8:15 a.m.-5:15 p.m. at the convenient location of the MC Advanced Technology Center (ATC), 3200 W. Cuthbert (corner of Midkiff and Cuthbert, next to Furr’s Cafeteria). Course fee is $365.

“This course is just one of several certification courses that we will offer through May,” explained Elizabeth Wall, open enrollment coordinator for MC Workforce Continuing Education. “Previously, workers had to travel to Houston or El Paso for the requirements and would incur travel costs, hotel costs and daily expenses. We are finding that people are responding positively to having the opportunity to receive this mandated training locally in Midland, and we have had specific requests from City of Midland officials to offer the training.”

Wall said that the courses contain information such as medical requirements, air monitoring and AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986).

The certification courses and seminars will be offered at various times through the middle of May. Tuition and fees range from $265 to $800 depending on course/seminar length.
