Poetry - Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest Awards Celebration, 5:30 p.m., Allison Fine Arts Building Wagner & Brown Auditorium

The Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest—with more than $1,000 in prize money—has been called one of the most prestigious poetry contests in the state. It was established in 1988 by the late Stanley Levitt to honor his wife’s memory, her love of poetry and her love for MC. The contest is open to anyone who has taken an English course at MC in the last calendar year.

“This year’s entries are truly exceptional,” noted contest organizer MC Department Chair of Technical Writing and Philosophy Brendan Egan. “Some are inspirational, some poignant and others are humorous. Wining poems will be published in the fall 2017 issue of MC’s Tableau magazine.”

The celebration will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Wagner & Brown Auditorium located in the Allison Fine Arts Building. Prize winners and finalists will read their award-winning poems. This year's judge, is Dr. Larry D. Griffin, former professor of English and chair of Fine Arts and Communications at Midland College. An Oklahoman, Griffin has one book of short stories, eleven books of poetry and more than four hundred poems, hundreds of essays and three dozen short stories in journals to his credit.

Art - Student Art Show and Reception, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Allison Fine Arts Building McCormick Gallery

The MC Art Department and the MC Community Relations Office extend a warm invitation to enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres while viewing beautiful works of art created by MC students. The reception will take place from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Allison Fine Arts Building McCormick Gallery.
