Good sports and BAD weather for MC
Midland College Athletic Director
I wanted to provide some updates on the craziness of the baseball and softball games from last weekend. The baseball team was scheduled to play four games at Frank Phillips, two on Friday and two on Saturday. We had been monitoring the weather and hoped to get Friday’s double-header in; which we were successful in doing. However the temperatures dropped considerably and rain, sleet and eventually snow entered the area.
Midland College baseballCoach Coleman and the FPC head baseball coach, agreed to move the games to Lubbock and away from the sloppy weather, on Saturday. However, Lubbock received rain. That was coupled with, the FPC baseball team’s inability to leave Borger due to the hazardous road conditions. Our team left Borger after the games on Friday and checked into a hotel in Lubbock. Since the Frank Phillips team was snowed/iced in, our baseball team left Lubbock on Saturday morning and returned to Midland.
The games were rescheduled for today, with the double-header scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
Midland College softball, the story was similar. However we held our team from traveling to Las Vegas, NM (Luna Community College) as we monitored the weather conditions there. We first decided to play the games at Luna CC on Sunday and Monday, but they received between 4” and 6” of snow.
The Luna CC coaches didn’t think they would have a field in “playing condition” until Tuesday (May 2nd). They also had impassable roads which prevented them from leaving until yesterday. Another of the complicating factors is the Region V West Softball Tournament, which is scheduled for May 5-7th in Lubbock. Teams and coaches have practices and a coach’s meeting on Thursday, May 4th. So playing Monday and Tuesday, would be difficult for both teams to practice on Thursday and play on Friday.
The final decision was made to have them travel here and play at MUGS. Conference Commissioner, Lyndon Hardin, did not think it was fair to the other conference teams to have us play on our home field. So after looking Artesia, NM; Lovington, NM; Canyon, TX; Lubbock, TX and fields at Odessa College and UTPB, he agreed to allow us to play the four games in Midland, at MUGS.
So the Midland College vs. Luna Community College series will be played today at MUGS with the double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m. Tomorrow’s double-header is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
