MC awards for service and excellence

• Employee awards presented for Instructors of the Year, staff excellence and outstanding college ambassador

On Thursday, May 4, Midland College (MC) employees celebrated employee excellence and service at the annual Awards Celebration held in the Allison Fine Arts Building Wagner & Brown Auditorium.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Instructors of the Year for the 2016-17 school year. MC students cast the ballots for this award, and eight faculty were chosen: Rabon Bewley, department chair, Drama and Music; Sylvia Brown, program chair, Business Systems; Frank DeLaO, associate professor, History; Michael Fields, program chair, Cosmetology; Tracy Gandy, program chair, Energy Technology; Ryan Peckham, professor, Organizational Management; Elizabeth Rainey, Paralegal/Legal Assistant instructor; and Joseph Schenkman, Biology instructor. Rebecca Randolph, English faculty, was named Adjunct Instructor of the Year.


MC Executive Vice President Dr. Richard Jolly presented staff excellence awards to Adelle Dowling, Social/Behavioral Sciences & Business Division clerk, and Lorraine Franklin, Data Center manager. Also receiving a staff excellence award was groundskeeper Robert Allen (in photo at right) who just celebrated his 90th birthday on April 16. Allen still works 40 hours a week maintaining the MC main campus grounds!

MC President Dr. Steve Thomas presented the Institutional Ambassador award to Director of Community Services Alfredo Chaparro (in photo at left) for his efforts to encourage and champion students to pursue their educational dreams and for fostering relationships between MC and various community nonprofit organizations.

Retirement awards were presented to Rita Nell Diffie, vice president, Student Services; Norma Duran, Continuing Education data specialist; James Fuller, Teaching & Learning Professional
Development Center coordinator (in photo at right); Teresa Jolliffe, English faculty; Paula Marshall Gray, Henry Professor of History; James McCutcheon, Diesel Technology faculty; Cecilia Miranda, Automation/Technical Services librarian; Karen Pape, English faculty; Delnor Poss, golf coach; Melinda Teel, Health Information Management program chair; and Donna Thompson, Psychology faculty.

In addition, Dr. Steve Thomas presented service awards and recognized employees for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 and 40 years of service.

Those receiving 35-year service awards were Omar Belazi, Technology Management/Bachelor of Applied Technology faculty; Bahola Edwards, assistant to the president; and Deana Savage, special advisor to the president.

Curt Pervier, dean of Applied Technology, and Delnor Poss, retiring golf coach, received 40-year service awards.
