MC Kids' College offers summer enrichment activities

• Kids are “Superheroes” at Kids’ College

From Rebecca Bell
Dean of Community Relations & Special Events

For more than 30 years, Midland College (MC) has been offering Kids’ College, a summer enrichment program for students who will be completing the 1st through 6th grades. Every year over 1,000 children participate in one or both of the two-week sessions. Participants may take one, two or three classes each two-week session, and each class lasts for 80 minutes. Participants will also receive a t-shirt with artwork depicting this year’s theme of “Superhero.”

“We will be offering our usual favorites, such as ‘Awesome Origami,’ ‘Duck Tape Designs’ and ‘Ooey Gooey Science,’ as well as some new classes like ‘Pipe Cleaner Palooza,’ ‘Dancin’ Feet – Dance Party’ and ‘Destination Yummy,’” stated Brenda Cordero, MC associate director of Community Programs Continuing Education. “Of course, we also offer lots of sports classes including baseball, basketball, flag football, cheerleading and yoga. This year, we are thrilled to be partnering with Midland Community Theatre, Sibley Nature Center and COM Aquatics for special camps. All of these classes and camps run for two weeks, June 5-15 and June 19-29. Participants can register for one or both two-week sessions.”

In addition, Cordero said that students who really enjoy science may want to consider enrolling in the Sciensational Workshops. Each of these in-depth workshops, such as “Egyptian Dig,” “CSI,” “Make IT and Take It Home” and “The Amazing 4 in 1 Robot,” is offered from 12:40-5:00 p.m. and lasts for just one week.

Another one-week option is Sewing Summer Camp where students will learn the fundamentals of sewing and knitting. The course runs from 2:10-5:00 p.m., and students may choose the session running June 5-8 or the session running June 12-15.

All classes and camps are held Mondays through Thursdays. Fee for each Kids’ College class is $45 with supply fees that range from $5 to $30. Prices for COM Aquatics swim camps, Midland Community Theatre summer school, Sibley Nature Center science camps, Sciencesational Workshops and Sewing Summer Camps differ.
