In 2013, the Uptown Midland Business and Professional Women (BPW) established an endowed scholarship at Midland College (MC) to be designated for a female student working toward an associate degree in a professional field. This year, the members of Uptown Midland BPW contributed an additional $30,000 to the scholarship, which now totals $80,000.

“Most of the money for the additional $30,000 donation to the scholarship was raised during our Woman of Achievement event over the past two years,” said Donette Marble, Uptown Midland BPW member. “Then, another $10,000 was raised during a massive Bunco party, which involved 70 people!”

According to Wendy Gilbert, MC director of Development & Alumni Relations, since the scholarship’s inception, a total of six students have received the award. During the 2016-2017 academic year, Associate Degree Nursing student Manka Kwayu received $3,345.48 from the Uptown Midland BPW endowed scholarship. Kwayu received her graduating nurse pin last night and will graduate tomorrow. She is scheduled to take the registered nurse licensure exam this summer.

“I am so grateful for the BPW scholarship,” said Kwayu. “It has helped to pay for classes, books and necessary supplies that I’ve needed for my clinical rotations. “I can’t thank the ladies of BPW enough for their thoughtfulness and generosity—not only for me, but for future students, as well.”

MC President Dr. Steve Thomas said, “I want to commend the members of Uptown Midland BPW for their continued support of Midland College and the future of Midland’s citizens. Providing educational scholarships for students like Manka will help to ensure that Midland has the necessary workforce to sustain a thriving community.”
